Western cards do not work. We show you how to safely plan your travel budget and pay locally.
Due to international sanctions, Visa and Mastercard issued outside of Russia no longer work. Your preparation is crucial for a smooth stay. Do not rely on old habits.
Accept that your usual cards are worthless in Russia. No paying in shops, no withdrawing cash from ATMs. Plan completely without them.
Calculate your budget for the entire stay. Add up hotel, food, transport, and souvenirs, then add a reserve.
Bring Euros or US Dollars. Important: Banknotes must be pristine. No tears, no stamps, no creases. Damaged notes are often rejected.
Exchange money only locally in Russia. Banks offer better rates than airport exchange offices. The rate fluctuates, so stay informed.
You can import up to 10,000 USD (equiv. approx 9,000 EUR) per person without declaration. Anything above must be declared at customs (Red Channel).
Don't put all eggs in one basket (or currency). A mix of Euros and Dollars adds flexibility. Note down bank addresses.
Visa, Mastercard, Amex do not work in Russia. Apple Pay and Google Pay are also disabled.
Exchange money only in banks or licensed exchange offices. Avoid street offers.
Distribute your cash across different bags or luggage. Use the hotel safe on site.
Try to book hotels and flights before departure via platforms that still accept your card.
